Making Teas, Tinctures, and Oils At Home
Herbal Teas
A single herb is all that’s needed for an enjoyable tea. This is particularly true for the new herbalist; working with each herb as an individual ingredient will help the student explore the flavor profile and aroma of the herb as well as its effect.
Tinctures
Tinctures are extracts, similar to herbal teas, but they are created by steeping plant matter in alcohol as opposed to hot water. There are many benefits to crafting herbal medicine in tincture form, including their potency which make them more convenient.
Infused Oils
The medicine maker may choose to use their oils to create salves, balms, and lotions or, in a pure oil application, either topically or for culinary use. Whichever method they decide upon, they will find great satisfaction in the beneficial and power results.
Herbal Allies
Herbs of the Park, Field and Forest
The responsible forager understands the significance of sustainable harvesting practices. Only gather what is needed and not more than one-third of a plant’s local population. When harvesting never take more than 1/6 of the plant’s foliage or branches.
Recipes
Calming Tea Recipe: 2 parts chamomile, 2 parts lemon balm, 1 part red clove, Pinch of lavender or clove buds
Combine herbs and place in a reusable tea bag or tea ball. Heat water until just boiling. Pour it over herbs and let steep for 5–7 minutes.
