James R. Knickman, PhD, retired as the Robert Derzon Chair in Public and Health Affairs at NYU. He held joint appointments at NYU Wagner School of Public Service and NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Department of Population Health. With four decades of experience in academia and philanthropy, Knickman’s focus is on health policy. He served as Vice President at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and President of the New York Health Foundation. Knickman, with a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, has been pivotal in researching and implementing innovative approaches to enhance the American healthcare system’s quality and efficiency. Additionally, he sits on the boards of three nonprofit organizations and has chaired the National Council on Aging in Virginia and the Robert Wood Johnson Health System in New Jersey.

Brian Elbel, PhD, MPH, is a professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. He leads the Section on Health Choice, Policy, and Evaluation, focusing on how decisions impact health, especially in obesity and food choice. Elbel employs behavioral economics to understand vulnerable groups’ health decisions and the impact of public policy.
